Heat Shields

This part, depending on the Brand, is also known as, Heat Plates, Briquette Trays, Flavorizer Bars, Heat Tents, Flame Tamers, etc. Essentially, they are flame (heat) distributors.

Gas grill heat shields rest above your grill burners and disperse the flames that the burner produces evenly throughout the grilling surface preventing uneven cooking, maximizing grill space, and protecting burners from drippings. These parts take some of the greatest beating in a grill. You have direct fire from below and grease from above.

Over time, these drippings can build up on your burners and prevent the burners from working properly. Ceramic Briquettes vs Heat Shields

Buying A Gas Grill Heat Plate

The first thing you need to consider when buying a grill heat plate is knowing your grill brand and model. Check your grill manual or the information sticker on the grill. If you do not have these then we suggest measuring your existing heat plates (front to back and left to right). The plates should be big enough to protect the burners and vaporize enough meat drippings.

Then consider material. Gas grill heat plates come in stainless steel or porcelain coated steel. These materials are able to protect your burner and add flavor to your food, so you should pick a material that goes well with your grill and that you enjoy. If you have a choice between porcelain or stainless, we always recommend stainless as once the porcelain chips, the steel beneath it will rust.
